Drinking at a Young Age
There are many reasons why teenagers start drinking at such a young age. One of the most major reason is because of peer pressure. When teenagers have friends who drink, it's most likely that they'll end up getting peer pressured to drink. Teens would try to convince their friends that it tastes so good or it helps you forget your troubles, but the thing teens don't know is if they end up drinking too much of it at such a young age, they'll end up becoming dependent on alcohol. In 2010, the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XV: Teens and Parents found that teens who have friends that drink are six times more likely to drink.
Prevention of Teenage Alcoholism
Although teens may be peer pressured, stress, depress, or anything else that urges them to use alcohol, teen alcoholism can be prevented. One way to prevent teenage alcoholism is to identify the teens who are at risk of drinking and teach them how to deal with their problems without the use of alcohol. To identify these teenagers are to look for those who are going through major transitions in their life because they're the ones at high risk for alcohol abuse. Some common life changes that would cause them to drink would be parents divorcing, separation or death, moving to a new school, and breaking up with a significant other. These situations can cause teenagers to go towards alcohol to relieve their pain. Therefore teenager alcohol presentation programs exist in schools and communities throughout the nation.
"By a wide margin, teenagers abuse alcohol more than any other substance. It is legal and widely available. Nationwide, teens with alcohol decadency are the majority of adolescents admitted for treatment." - Supporting materials for The Addiction Project, produced by HBO in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
